A Study of the Mercury ( II ) Sorption and Transport with Oak Ridge Reservation Soil
نویسندگان
چکیده
A series of batch and column laboratory experiments were conducted to determine adsorption coefficients of mercury (II) for Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) soil. The experimental setup used soil collected from an area offsite of the ORR, in a location upstream of East Fork Poplar Creek (EFPC). The batch equilibrium experiments were conducted in the range of 600 to 5,000 μg/L of initial Hg(II) concentrations at 5C, 15C, and 24C. Adsorption data demonstrated the best fit to the Linear adsorption isotherms, with Kd values in the range of 541 (±17) mL/g, at equilibrium solution concentrations below 0.025 mg/L of mercury. The effect of temperature was minor and inconclusive. This study indicated that the Linear adsorption isotherm adequately represents the adsorption of total mercury to ORR soils samples. Desorption experiments found that up to 5% of total mercury mass accumulated in soil can be potentially mobilized.

Mercury characterization in a soil sample collected nearby the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation utilizing sequential extraction and thermal desorption method.
A new attempt to characterize Hg speciation and to evaluate Hg mobility in soils was made by applying operationally defined speciation techniques coupled with fractionation of soil components to a soil sample collected just outside the Y-12 boundary of the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) site. The soil sample was fractionated based on redoximorphic features and particle size and a sequential extrac...

Sorption hysteresis in soil constituents has important environmental implications such as pollutant transport and bioavailability. This research was carried out to study sorption reversibility of cadmium (Cd) on natural zeolite. Sorption isotherms were derived by sorption of Cd (П) from solutions containing different concentrations of Cd in the range of 1 to 10 mg L-1 using a 24h batch equilibr...

The Oak Ridge Reservation, established in 1942, was the designated site for the construction of the atomic bomb. During a 20-year period from 1944-1963 radioactive and toxic chemical pollutants, especially mercury compounds were released into the surrounding waterways. Mercury in the soil environment can undergo numerous chemical transformations. Conventional methods for detection of total soil...

Uranium contamination of soils and sediments often originates from acidic or alkaline waste sources, with diffusion being a major transport mechanism. Measurements of U(VI) diffusion from initially pH 2 and pH 11 solutions into a slightly alkaline Altamont soil and a neutral Oak Ridge soil were obtained through monitoring uptake from boundary reservoirs and from U concentration profiles within ...
